Dúchas.ie is a project to digitize the National Folklore Collection of Ireland, one of the largest folklore collections in the world. Eighty per cent (around 64,000 items) of the material from four counties in the Schools’ Collection is available on this site. New material will be made available on a phased basis.
The Schools’ Collection is the first collection being made available on this site. It is a collection of folklore compiled by schoolchildren in Ireland in the 1930s. A considerable number of the articles featured on the website were collected in schools in Co. Mayo, including Bekan N.S., Logboy N.S., Knock N.S. and the old Lochanamon N.S. and may be of considerable interest to people in the area.
This wonderful resource may be accessed at http://www.duchas.ie/en
Below is an example of some of the material collected in Bekan N.S. (Beacan) from 1938.
