On Friday 6th February Maria Walsh, the current Rose of Tralee visited Bekan National School to launch the Literacy Lift-Off programme. The Literacy Lift-Off programme is an early intervention programme for helping children improve their literacy and writing skills. The Bekan Parents Association funded this programme through a variety of imaginative fundraising initiatives and the Staff of Bekan N.S. wish to acknowledge and thank them most sincerely for their wonderful support.
Maria was also given the honour of presenting the “Digital Schools of Distinction Award” to the Staff of Bekan National School. This award recognises Bekan National School’s engagement in the promotion, recognition and encouragement of excellence in the use of technology in primary schools .This project was the vision of Mr. Vinny Kelly (Retired Principal) and the school was honoured that he accepted the award on their behalf.
Bekan National School presented Maria with a cheque for €400 for “The Hope Foundation” and “The Niall Mellon Township Trust”. These are charities that are close to Maria’s heart and during her visit to the school she talked to the students about the wonderful achievements of these charities and her own personal experiences of working with these organizations in third world countries. The pupils of Bekan National School held a Bake Sale in the school during the week to raise this money.
