The Twelfth Day Of July- Joan Lingard

In Miss O Brien’s classroom of 5th and 6th class we just finished a read aloud story called The 12th Day of July. The 12th Day of July is about the troubles between the Catholics and the Protestants in Belfast years ago. After we read one chapter each day we would be asked questions by our teacher about the chapter. The book was very interesting and I would definitely recommend it. After we finished the book we did an auto-biography poem about the four main characters in the book.
By Dylan and John
Sadie
Lives in bedlam Belfast where there is a lot of prejudice
Hears the beat of the drums and the children’s voices singing
Sees the colourful murals on the walls
Touches the soft velvet of her new costume
Needs to make money to buy the bunting
Fears that Brede might not survive
Gives her best to fight for her religion
Wonders if she’ll ever get to know Brede better
Dreams about walking in the parade
Believes that one day there will be peace
Loves adventures and
Is very courageous

Kevin
Lives in the Catholic side of Belfast where there is a lot of trivial fighting
Hears Sadie breaking into his house and meddling with the table
Sees children playing happily in the street
Touches King Billy’s mural in disgust
Needs to take heed of what he is doing wrong
Fears Brede will never recover from her horrific injury
Gives snide remarks about King Billy
Wonders if the Catholics and Protestants will ever get along
Dreams of moving to a peaceful county
Believes that Protestants aren’t worthy of living in Ireland
Loves playing with his friends and
Is a good brother to Brede
