Here are photographs of some of the experiments we carried out during Science Week. We tested to see whether an orange would float or sink. The orange peel has air pockets that help it to float, but if it is peeled, the fruit will sink. After that, we discovered that oil and water do not mix. We took turns shaking a bottle of oil and water and the oil floated back to the top. However, if a few drops of washing-up liquid are added, the oil and water join together. We also made gravity free water by filling a glass with water, placing cardboard on top before turning the glass upside down. With no air inside the glass, the air pressure from outside the glass is greater than the pressure of the water inside the glass. The extra air pressure manages to hold the cardboard in place.
