Our Green school Programme

The Green School Programme in Bekan N.S.

Bekan N.S have been working with the Green schools since September 2007. We have worked on the themes of Litter and Waste, Energy Conservation, Water Conservation and Travel.
We worked towards our first flag in 2007. By reducing waste and litter and promoting recycling and reusing  in the school we were successful and  were awarded our first flag for Litter and Waste in May 2008.
We worked for the next two years on the theme of Energy Conservation. We promoted and encouraged the school community to reduce the amount of energy being used in school and we combated the wasting of energy in our classrooms. Our work paid off and in May 2010 we were awarded our second flag for Energy Conservation.
Success didn't end there. For the following two years the Green School Committee and the whole school community worked to get our third flag for Water Conservation. With lots of work from everybody on saving water we were awarded our third Green flag for Water in May 2012.
We worked hard to maintain our three areas of success and in 2015 we decided we'd try to get our fourth flag. Travel was the theme and we were determined to be successful again. We worked hard on encouraging the school community to travel green when coming to school and in May 2017 we were delighted to hear we had won our fourth Flag.
As you all know we worked very hard to get our fourth flag for Travel. We have been doing a WOW day ( Walk on Wednesday) on the first Wednesday of every month. Before we attempted this we had to do a Walkability audit to check the best and safest route for our walk. Here is a presentation of our findings.......

Working Towards our Biodiversity Flag

The Green Schools Committee are back at work again this year, with our focus on Biodiversity. The committee have been educating the school community about what Biodiversity is ( all living creatures in our world) and how we can work to protect and enhance it.
As part of this the Green Schools Committee have been creating a friendly place for our wildlife around the school- we have put up bird boxes, bird feeders and butterfly tables. We have even built a Mini-beast Motel. We have set up a Biodiversity Garden on the school grounds where we have planted lots of wild-flowers suitable for pollinators. We have a bee hotel and bird bath ready to put out when the weather warms up and our birds and bees are busy in the garden.

Our Spooky Walk

As part of our Green schools quest for greener Travel we had a special spooky walk to school this morning. We dressed 'Spooktaculary bright' in our brightly decorated costumes so that we would be easily seen.  We assembled at Ronan's shop  and we set off on our spooky trail. We hope we didn't scare any drivers on the road!

Travel Green with Bekan N.S!

As we all know, Bekan N.S are working towards our next green flag with the theme of Travel. We are working on creating awareness and promoting environmentally friendly ways of travelling. To instill this message further we decided to compose a Travel Rap. Below is a video of our Green School Committee and the students of 3rd and 4th Class performing it.

Our Green Code

We have been working very hard on our Green Schools Committee. Below is our Green Code. We composed and wrote it as a way of reminding the school community of the importance of litter management, water and energy conservation and greener travel.

Bekan N.S receive the Green Flag for Travel

On the 21st of April we received a letter informing us that we were successful in our quest to get the Green Flag for Travel. We received an invitation to attend the McWilliam Park hotel in Claremorris on the 11th of May to receive our award. Three members of the Committee attended the ceremony and received the award on behalf of the school. It was a proud day for the whole school and we look forward to raising our fourth flag soon!
