Who we are....A little about our ParishBekan, according to local tradition, derives its name from St Béacán, whose feast day was celebrated by an annual ‘pattern’ on 9 July. His 'noteworthy school’ once flourished here and a mound near the ruin of the medieval church marks his reputed burial place.
Archaeological evidence of human habitation in Bekan goes back 4,000 years. A unique 8th century musical instrument, discovered in a Bekan bog in 1791, is now in the National Museum |
Where we are.....Our school is situated just North of the N60 between the towns of Ballyhaunis and Claremorris and south of the R323 between Knock and Ballyhaunis.
